ChatGPT Finances is now free: what it sees and can't do

ChatGPT Finances now reaches Free and Go users in the US. What it can see, what it can't do (move money), how linking works and how to disconnect.

ChatGPT Finances, the feature that links your bank, card and investment accounts to ChatGPT, is now rolling out to Free and Go users in the United States on web, iOS and Android. OpenAI announced the expansion on October 2, 2026. Before you link anything, here is what the feature can read, what it cannot do (it cannot move money), how the connection works and what OpenAI keeps after you disconnect.

Key takeaways

  • Who gets it: Free and Go users in the US join Plus and Pro, according to OpenAI's release notes. OpenAI says it is rolling out, so it may not show up for you yet.
  • What it reads: balances, transactions, investments and liabilities through Plaid, plus an optional Experian credit report. OpenAI says it never sees full account numbers.
  • What it can't do: move money, pay bills, make trades, change account settings or open and close accounts. OpenAI says it helps you understand and plan, and is not a financial adviser.
  • Leaving: disconnecting deletes synced account data from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, in OpenAI's words. Chats and financial memories stay until you delete them yourself.

What changed

Finances started as a preview for Pro subscribers on May 15, 2026, on web and iOS. TechCrunch's launch report noted that it arrived a month after OpenAI acquired the team behind Hiro, a personal finance startup. Plus users and Android followed in late June, and on September 21 OpenAI added Experian credit scores for Plus and Pro.

The October 2 update opens it to Free and Go users. The official @ChatGPT post says Free and Go users can connect accounts with both Plaid and Experian "to make sense of your money and credit." If you're weighing a paid plan anyway, our comparison of ChatGPT Pro 500 and Pro 200 covers what the higher tiers add. Finances itself is no longer one of them.

What ChatGPT Finances can see

OpenAI's announcement post says a connected account gives ChatGPT your balances, transactions, investments and liabilities, and that it "cannot see full account numbers." Each bank decides how much it shares. OpenAI's help article warns that some institutions send balances but not full transaction history, holdings, APRs or due dates.

With that data, the Finances page builds a dashboard. Depending on what you connect, it can show:

  • spending by category and this month against recent trends;
  • upcoming payments, bills and subscriptions with their next charge dates;
  • net worth over time;
  • portfolio allocation and daily changes in stocks and ETFs;
  • an Experian VantageScore 3.0 credit score, if you link your credit report.

You can also ask questions in any chat. Typing @finances or /finances points ChatGPT at your financial data, and OpenAI says answers may cite the data they used. OpenAI also admits the obvious limit: transfers, card payments and refunds can be miscounted as spending, "and as always, AI can make mistakes."

What it can't do: move money

The help article lists what ChatGPT cannot do with a connected account: move money, pay bills, change account settings, make trades, change retirement contributions, open or close accounts, or file taxes. It also says ChatGPT is not a fiduciary, a registered investment adviser, a broker-dealer or a tax preparer, and that its answers are for information and planning only.

That rule covers the feature as it works today. In the same announcement, OpenAI says its "vision" is to go beyond answers and help people "take action," with partners like Intuit. Its example is a credit card recommendation that leads to an application inside ChatGPT. The announcement gives no date for that.

How linking a bank account works

Linking runs through Plaid, a company that connects apps to more than 12,000 financial institutions, according to OpenAI. The steps in the help article:

  1. Open Finances in ChatGPT and select Get started, or type "@Finances, connect my accounts" in any chat.
  2. Select Connect with Plaid.
  3. Sign in to your bank through Plaid and choose the accounts to share.
  4. Return to ChatGPT. Syncing usually takes a few minutes and, rarely, several hours.

The credit report is a separate connection. You fill out Experian's own identity form, and OpenAI tells you to type personal details and codes there, not in the chat. OpenAI says checking your score this way is a soft inquiry that does not affect it, and that the score updates monthly.

What OpenAI keeps, and how to disconnect

Your finance chats follow the same model training setting as the rest of your ChatGPT account. OpenAI says you can change it in Settings > Data controls, so check it before linking. Temporary chats can't access your connected accounts at all.

To disconnect, go to Settings > Apps > Finances or the Finances page. OpenAI says synced account data is then deleted from its systems within 30 days, and that Plaid deletes the data tied to that ChatGPT connection within 30 days too, though Plaid may keep some information as the law permits or requires. Disconnecting Experian also deletes its credit data from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, and leaves your bank links in place.

Three things don't go away on their own:

  • Old conversations. Any figures you discussed stay in your chat history until you delete those chats.
  • Financial memories. Goals and debts you told ChatGPT live in a separate memory list, which you clear from the Finances page.
  • Other Plaid links. If you used Plaid with other apps, those connections stay; you manage them in the Plaid Portal.

It depends on how much you trust one more company with your data. At least one identity-theft expert says not yet. Eva Velasquez, CEO of the Identity Theft Resource Center, told Yahoo Finance in May that "the technology is too new" and suggested entering spending data by hand instead.

If you do link, OpenAI's announcement recommends turning on multi-factor authentication for your ChatGPT account. That matters more than usual: anyone who gets into the account could see the same balances you do. For more on settings like these, see our privacy coverage and the rest of the AI section.

Bottom line

ChatGPT Finances now costs nothing to try in the US, and OpenAI's documents say it can look but not act: it sees what you spend and owe, but it cannot touch your money. The trade is your financial history for a free dashboard and a chatbot that answers questions about it. If you try it, check the training setting first, turn on multi-factor authentication, and remember that disconnecting doesn't delete your old chats or financial memories. Watch for the "take action" features OpenAI has promised, since those would change what linking means.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT Finances free?

Yes, in the US. As of October 2, 2026, OpenAI lists it for Free, Go, Plus and Pro users on web, iOS and Android. It is still rolling out, so some eligible accounts may not see it yet.

Can ChatGPT move money from my bank account?

No. OpenAI's help article says ChatGPT cannot move money, pay bills, make trades or change account settings. It can only read the data you connect and answer questions about it.

Will checking my score in ChatGPT lower it?

OpenAI says no: checking your score through the Experian connection is a soft inquiry. The score shown is a VantageScore 3.0 that updates monthly, so it may differ from the one your lender uses.

Is ChatGPT Finances available outside the US?

Not yet. OpenAI's help article lists it only for users in the US, and OpenAI's documents give no date for other countries.
