ChatGPT Pro 500 vs Pro 200: which plan to pick now
ChatGPT Pro 500 costs $500 for 25x Plus usage and Ultrafast, while Pro 200 drops to 10x. Which plan fits you, and what $200 plan users lose after October 29.

OpenAI's new ChatGPT Pro 500 plan costs $500 a month and gives you 25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance, plus Ultrafast, a faster mode for GPT-6 Astra that no other Pro plan gets. At the same time, the $200 plan is shrinking: OpenAI confirms that new Pro 200 subscribers already get a lower allowance, and that existing ones move to it after October 29, 2026. Here is how the three Pro plans compare, which one fits the way you work, and exactly what a current $200 subscriber loses and when.
Key takeaways
- Pro 500 ($500 a month) has the largest allowance, 25 times Plus in OpenAI's words, and it is the only Pro plan with GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast in Codex and ChatGPT Work.
- Pro 200 keeps its $200 price with less usage. Engadget reports it falls from 20 to 10 times Plus in Codex and Work, and from 200 to 100 GPT-6 Pro messages a week in Chat. OpenAI's own pages say only "lower usage allowance," without those figures, as of September 30, 2026.
- Existing $200 subscribers keep their old allowance through October 29, 2026, OpenAI says. MakeUseOf reports a one-time grant of 62,500 credits, worth about $2,500, that expires at the end of 2026; OpenAI's public pages don't mention it as of September 30.
- Ultrafast buys speed, not volume. It spends your included usage 8 times faster than Standard mode.
- By our math, every Pro tier now costs about $20 per Plus-sized allowance, if the reported multiples hold. The $200 plan used to cost $10.
ChatGPT Pro 500, Pro 200 and Pro 100 side by side
OpenAI now sells three ChatGPT Pro plans, all billed monthly with no annual option, according to its help article on Pro tiers. The DevDay 2026 recap puts Pro 500 at "25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance." For the other two plans, OpenAI's pages say only that Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100, so the multiples below come from press reports.
US prices, as of September 30, 2026:
| Pro 100 | Pro 200 | Pro 500 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | $100 | $200 | $500 |
| Codex and Work usage vs Plus | 5x (reported) | 10x (reported); 20x until October 29 for existing subscribers | 25x (OpenAI) |
| GPT-6 Pro messages in Chat | Not published; shared weekly pool with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro | 100 a week (reported; was 200) | Not published |
| GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast | No | No | Yes |
| Price per Plus-sized allowance (our math) | $20 | $20 (was $10) | $20 |
The 10x figure for Pro 200 and the 5x for Pro 100 come from a post on X by Thibault Sottiaux, an OpenAI product lead, WinBuzzer reports. The 5x also matches what OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes listed as Pro 100's standard allowance when that plan launched earlier this year.
Those multiples cover ChatGPT Work and Codex, which draw on one shared pool, per OpenAI's pricing documentation. The same page says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit, unlike Plus, though weekly limits may apply. Pro plans also come with Dot, OpenAI's new always-on agent, which is rolling out gradually and skips the EEA, Switzerland and the UK at launch; the release notes say dots usage won't count toward Pro allowances for the first month.
What Ultrafast actually gets you
Ultrafast is a premium speed tier for GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's most capable model. In the DevDay recap, OpenAI says it generates tokens up to 8 times faster in Codex, about 300 tokens per second. Its speed documentation adds that this measures token generation, not how long a whole task takes.
The catch is the meter. The same page says Ultrafast uses included subscription limits at 8 times the Standard rate, and purchased credits at 6 times. So if you ran everything on Ultrafast, Pro 500's 25x allowance would stretch to about 3 Plus allowances of Standard-speed Astra work, less than Pro 200's 10x at Standard. That's our arithmetic on OpenAI's multipliers, assuming the same tasks; real usage varies with context, tools and reasoning.

Access is narrow. Among Pro plans, Ultrafast is only on Pro 500; OpenAI says buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock it, and keeping your old Pro 200 allowance doesn't add it either. It works only with GPT-6 Astra for now, and OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast is "coming soon."
What existing Pro 200 subscribers lose, and when
OpenAI's help article sets out the timeline, and the press reports fill in the numbers:
- Through October 29, 2026: you keep your previous allowance if your Pro 200 subscription was active at OpenAI's eligibility cutoff or in the seven days before it, and only while it stays active.
- After October 29: your subscription moves to the lower allowance. The price stays $200, and OpenAI says affected users get an email with details.
- What shrinks: per Engadget, Codex and Work usage goes from 20 to 10 times Plus, and the GPT-6 Pro cap in Chat from 200 to 100 messages a week.
When you reach Pro 200's weekly usage limits for GPT-6 Pro, ChatGPT switches to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium, according to OpenAI's GPT-6 Pro help article. You can still pick GPT-5.6 Sol Pro while its daily allowance lasts.
One trap: don't let the subscription lapse if you value the old allowance. OpenAI says subscribers who aren't eligible for grandfathering get the updated, lower one, so canceling and coming back later lands you on 10x. Scheduling a cancellation keeps your access until the end of the billing period.
The one-time credit, explained
MakeUseOf reports that existing Pro 200 subscribers hit by the change get 62,500 usage credits, worth about $2,500, to use by the end of 2026. New sign-ups don't get them. OpenAI's public pages don't mention the grant as of September 30, but the dollar value fits OpenAI's own pricing elsewhere: its release notes value a student offer at "$100 in ChatGPT credits, or 2,500 credits," which is 4 cents a credit.
How the credit behaves, per OpenAI's help article:
- Included usage goes first, then your credit balance. Since you keep 20x through October 29, you'll mostly draw on the credit afterward, which leaves about two months before it expires. That's our reading of the dates, not an OpenAI statement.
- It covers Codex, ChatGPT Work and ChatGPT for Word, Excel and PowerPoint. OpenAI says credits don't add usage for every model or feature.
- It doesn't unlock Ultrafast on Pro 200.
What does 62,500 credits buy? OpenAI's rate card charges 1,250 credits per million output tokens for GPT-6 Astra at Standard speed, so the grant covers up to 50 million Astra output tokens, fewer once input counts. GPT-6.1 Sol charges 250 credits per million output tokens, so the same credit goes five times further there.
Every Pro tier now costs the same for what you get
Divide each price by its multiple and you get $20 for every Plus-sized allowance: $100 for 5x, $200 for 10x, $500 for 25x. That's the same rate as Plus itself. The old Pro 200, at 20x, worked out to $10, so the volume discount is gone. Moving up to Pro 500 buys headroom and Ultrafast, not a cheaper rate.
OpenAI explains the lower Pro 200 allowance as reflecting "our increasingly efficient models." It hasn't published how much less a typical task costs now, but its pricing page hints at the idea: on Plus, it estimates 15 to 160 local messages per five hours with GPT-6.1 Sol against 5 to 45 with GPT-6 Astra. If you move routine work to the cheaper model, a smaller allowance goes further. Our roundup of the DevDay 2026 announcements covers GPT-6.1 Sol, and our guide to GPT-6 Sol and Luna explains the model tiers underneath.
What it means for you
- Pro 100 fits if you mostly want GPT-6 Pro in Chat and moderate Codex use. At 5x, it's half of the new Pro 200 for half the price.
- Pro 200 now makes sense only if you regularly run out on Pro 100. It no longer comes with the discount that made it the obvious choice for heavy users.
- Pro 500 is for people who run Codex or Work for hours a day, need more than 10x, or lose real money waiting on Astra. At launch you subscribe on the ChatGPT website, not through the app stores, OpenAI's release notes say.
- If you pay $200 today, nothing changes until October 29. Keep the subscription active, spend the credit between October 30 and year-end, and check your usage dashboard in November before deciding whether 10x is enough.
- Plus with credits is another route: OpenAI lets Plus and Pro users buy extra credits after they hit their limits, so an occasional heavy week doesn't require a bigger plan.
The model lineup under these plans is still moving. OpenAI canceled GPT-6.1 Astra this week, so GPT-6 Astra remains the model Ultrafast speeds up.
Bottom line
ChatGPT Pro 500 is the plan for heavy Codex and Work users who want the largest allowance and Ultrafast, but Ultrafast burns that allowance 8 times faster. Pro 200 keeps its price with a smaller allowance: OpenAI confirms the cut, and the 10x and 100-message figures come from Engadget and WinBuzzer's reporting, not OpenAI's pages, as of September 30, 2026. If you're a current $200 subscriber, you keep your old limits through October 29; MakeUseOf reports a $2,500 credit to cushion the change, due to expire at the end of 2026. Watch for OpenAI's email to affected users, which should state the new limits in writing. More plan and model coverage is in our AI section.
FAQ
How much usage does ChatGPT Pro 500 include?
OpenAI says Pro 500 includes 25 times the ChatGPT Plus allowance, the most of any Pro plan, for $500 a month. That allowance covers ChatGPT Work and Codex, which share usage. Ultrafast draws on the same allowance at 8 times the Standard rate.
Is the Pro 200 plan cut for existing subscribers too?
Yes, after a grace period. OpenAI says eligible existing subscribers keep their previous allowance through October 29, 2026, then move to the lower one at the same $200 price. Reports put the new level at 10 times Plus, down from 20.
Can I get Ultrafast on Pro 200 by buying credits?
No. OpenAI says Ultrafast is available only on Pro 500 among Pro plans, and buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock it. Eligible Enterprise and Edu workspaces can also use it.
When does the Pro 200 credit expire?
MakeUseOf reports that the 62,500-credit grant for existing Pro 200 subscribers expires at the end of 2026. OpenAI's public help pages don't describe the grant as of September 30, 2026, so check the email OpenAI sends to affected subscribers for the exact terms.
