Kena: Scars of Kosmora is delayed to 2027. Ember Lab, the studio behind 2021's Kena: Bridge of Spirits, announced on October 1, 2026 that its sequel for PS5 and PC will miss the 2026 window it set in February, because the team needs "just a bit more time" to polish a much bigger game. There's no new release date yet, only the year.

Key takeaways

  • Kena: Scars of Kosmora now launches in 2027 on PS5 (physical and digital) and PC (digital). No month or day has been given.
  • Ember Lab says the extra time is for polish: it wants a game that beats Bridge of Spirits in quality "and at a much bigger scale."
  • With the delay came new details: four elemental cultures, temple dungeons called Alchemystic Temples, and a crystalline canine companion Kena can ride.
  • As of October 2, there's no new date, no price and no pre-order, only a wishlist.

Why Kena: Scars of Kosmora was delayed

The news came in a PlayStation Blog post signed by two people from Ember Lab: game writer Thomas Varga and COO Josh Grier. They say the team has been "heads down" since the February reveal, and that the goal is a game that exceeds the quality of the first one at a far larger size. "To do that we need just a bit more time," they write, adding that moving into 2027 lets them "really polish the expanded game experience."

That's the whole stated reason. The studio doesn't mention any specific problem, a change of platforms or a change of publisher. Anything beyond "more polish for a bigger game" would be guesswork.

The 2026 promise was explicit. When Grier announced the game on February 12, the post said it "launches on PlayStation 5 and PC this year." The same post said that partnering with PlayStation Studios had let the team build "an even larger world."

The new details: temples, cultures and a canine mount

Ember Lab used the delay post to say more about the island of Kosmora than it had in February. According to the studio:

  • Kena is older. She's an experienced Spirit Guide, a warrior and healer who helps troubled spirits move on, now trying to work out what Spirit Guiding means for the living. Her childhood friend Orfio believes Kosmora holds answers for both of them.
  • Four elemental cultures. Four interconnected cultures once thrived on the island, each built around one element, until a cataclysm destroyed one of them. Several living cultures, each with its own region and conflicts, remain.
  • Alchemystic Temples. These Spirit Guide temples are the game's dungeons. Ember Lab calls them "a big part of the game" and says they pay off with "transformative rewards" that move Kena's adventure forward.
  • A crystalline canine companion. An ancient spirit that Kena rides around the larger world. It also fights with her, mounted and on foot, and helps solve Alchemystic puzzles. The studio hasn't named it.

The studio also describes the sequel as "a character-focused linear adventure" like the first game, but with a broader scope and more to find off the main path. That matches the February pitch of elemental spirit companions that grow as your bond deepens.

What happens next

With Kena: Scars of Kosmora delayed and no date set, the open questions are the date, the price and whether there will be special editions. Ember Lab hasn't said when it will share any of them. If you want a nudge when it does, the wishlist on PlayStation Store or Steam is the simplest way.

For PS5 owners, the same day brought other news on the PlayStation Blog: Sony detailed AI upscaling for the standard PS5. You can follow more coverage in the video games section and on the PS5 tag.

Bottom line

With Kena: Scars of Kosmora delayed to 2027, the sequel is still coming to PS5 and PC, just not this year. Ember Lab's only stated reason is polish for a much bigger game than Bridge of Spirits, and it softened the news with a real look at the sequel: elemental cultures, temple dungeons and a canine companion you can ride. Until the studio names a date, treat any specific 2027 month as rumor.
