Reddit RSS shutdown: every date before the API closes
Reddit confirmed its RSS shutdown for November 13 and a full public API close in March 2027. Every date, who loses what, and what to do before then.

The Reddit RSS shutdown is set for November 13, 2026, and the rest of its public API follows in March 2027. The company confirmed both dates on September 30 in two posts, one for moderators and one for developers, and said apps that haven't registered will start losing access on January 12, 2027. Here is the full timeline, who each step hits, what Reddit's migration money actually pays, and what you can do if you read Reddit through an RSS feed.
Key takeaways
- Reddit confirmed it: it stops supporting RSS feeds on November 13, 2026, and Reddit says that for feeds outside a community you moderate "there is no replacement."
- New requests for public API access close on October 31, 2026. Unregistered apps start losing access on January 12, 2027, and all remaining public access ends in March 2027, with no exact day given yet.
- Reddit's reason, in its own words, is that RSS is "a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse." The link to AI bots is how TechCrunch reads it; Reddit's posts don't name AI.
- The $1M migration program pays $1,000 per eligible app that moves to Reddit's Developer Platform. Sign-up for that payment closes November 30, 2026.
- Moderators who rely on RSS alerts get a supported path, the Discord Relay app. Regular feed readers don't.
The Reddit RSS shutdown and API timeline
Reddit split the news across a moderator post in r/modnews and a developer post in r/redditdev, both published September 30, 2026. Put together, the dates look like this:
| Date | What happens, according to Reddit |
|---|---|
| October 31, 2026 | New requests for public API access are no longer accepted |
| November 10, 2026 | Reddit posts a migration progress update and reminder |
| November 13, 2026 | RSS feeds stop being supported |
| November 30, 2026 | Registration for the migration bounty program closes |
| January 12, 2027 | API access starts closing for apps and users that haven't registered or answered Reddit's outreach |
| February 23, 2027 | Another progress update and reminder |
| March 2027 | Public API access closes for all remaining apps and users |
Two other changes ride along. Old Reddit, the classic interface, will be limited "in the next few months" to logged-in users who have used it in the last six months, a group Reddit says covers "the vast majority" of Old Reddit users; moderators keep access regardless. And in new communities, or ones that have never used AutoModerator, its enforcement actions (report, filter, remove, mark as spam, approve) are disabled in favor of Reddit's Rules Hub and Automations.
Who loses what
If you follow subreddits in an RSS reader, the Reddit feeds you added to apps like Feedly, Inoreader or NetNewsWire lose Reddit's support on November 13. Reddit's moderator post is blunt about it: for RSS used outside a community you moderate, it offers nothing in its place.
If you moderate a community, Reddit recommends moving RSS-based alerts to Discord Relay, an app on its Developer Platform, and has a setup guide for it. Mods whose community depends on a bot with no known maintainer can report it through Reddit's form; Reddit says it has received more than 100 submissions so far.
If you build an app or bot on the public Data API, it has to move to the Developer Platform, Reddit's own system for apps that run on Reddit (it calls it Devvit), or stop working in 2027. Reddit says more than 14,000 apps and bots have registered, and that popular ones such as DeltaBot, MagicEyeBot and RemindMeBot have finished or nearly finished moving.
If you use Reddit data for research, social listening or an AI assistant, TechCrunch's Sarah Perez reports that those uses lose their free programmatic access, and sets the change against Reddit's paid AI data deals. Reddit's two posts don't describe a separate route for researchers.
What the $1M migration program pays
Reddit calls it the $1M App Migration Program. According to the developer post, it includes:
- $1,000 for each eligible app that successfully migrates;
- eligibility for Reddit Developer Funds for ported apps;
- free hosting on the Developer Platform;
- migration guides, office hours and direct support, with extra help for critical moderation apps.
To be considered for the $1,000, you apply through the app registration form by November 30, 2026. Reddit points out that this is weeks before the January 12 access changes, so waiting until then means missing the payment. Which apps count as eligible is set in Reddit's program terms, linked above, so read them before you plan around the money. The technical steps are in Reddit's Data API to Devvit migration guide.
Why Reddit is closing RSS and its API
Reddit frames it as security. The moderator post says the company wants to "make it harder for bad actors to scrape Reddit," and that RSS had become a common route for it. Earlier this year Reddit already required a login for Old Reddit, saying unauthenticated access was that interface's "largest source of abusive scraping and automated traffic."
The AI angle comes from the business around it. TechCrunch notes that Reddit's "other revenue," mostly AI data licensing, grew 24% year over year to $43 million in the second quarter of 2026. Closing free, unauthenticated routes to the same posts fits that business, but that's an inference: Reddit's posts talk about scraping and abuse, not about licensing.
What RSS users can do before November 13
- Export your feed list now. Most readers can save your subscriptions as an OPML file, so you keep a record of the subreddits you followed.
- Follow those subreddits inside Reddit with a logged-in account, which Reddit's posts leave untouched.
- If you're a mod, set up Discord Relay before the cutoff and test it, as Reddit's post advises.
- If you rely on a bot, ask its maintainer whether it is registered. If nobody knows, use Reddit's form above.

Bottom line
The dates are fixed except the last one: RSS goes on November 13, API sign-ups close October 31, the bounty closes November 30, cutoffs start January 12, 2027, and everything else ends sometime in March 2027. Moderators and developers have a supported path and, for some apps, $1,000 to take it. People who simply read Reddit through RSS don't, so after the Reddit RSS shutdown the practical choice is reading inside Reddit itself. Watch for Reddit's November 10 migration progress update.
FAQ
When does Reddit RSS stop working?

Is Reddit shutting down its API completely?
The Reddit API shutdown covers the public Data API. Reddit says new access requests end October 31, 2026, unregistered apps start losing access January 12, 2027, and all remaining public access closes in March 2027. Apps are expected to run on Reddit's Developer Platform instead.
Is there a replacement for Reddit RSS feeds?
Only for moderators. Reddit recommends the Discord Relay app for mod alerts and says that for RSS outside a community you moderate "there is no replacement."
How do apps get the $1,000 migration payment?
Apply through Reddit's app registration form by November 30, 2026, then move the app to the Developer Platform. Reddit says the payment goes to eligible apps that successfully migrate, under the program's published terms.
