TikTok is adding an AI shopping assistant that answers questions about a product while you browse, plus Buy Direct, a one-click checkout that lets you buy from a brand without leaving the app. The company announced both on October 5, 2026, at Advertising Week New York, as part of what it calls Agentic Commerce. Here is what you will actually see, who can use it today, who the checkout partners are, and what happens to your data and to merchants.

Key takeaways

  • The assistant: a chat that answers questions about product details, shipping, sizing and availability, and can carry you through to the purchase, by TikTok's description.
  • Buy Direct: one-click checkout from brands in the For You feed, using stored payment methods and saved addresses, with order tracking inside TikTok. It is separate from TikTok Shop.
  • Availability: TikTok calls it eligibility-based testing for advertisers and gave no per-market dates. Adweek reports it is starting to roll out in the US.
  • Partners and data: built with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe. The brand stays the seller of record, and Salesforce says merchants get your contact details and purchase history.

What TikTok's AI shopping assistant does

In its newsroom announcement, TikTok describes Shopping Assistant as a conversational AI agent that understands context, remembers what you need and finds relevant products. It answers questions about product details, shipping, sizing, availability and purchasing in one conversation, and TikTok says it is built into "multiple TikTok touchpoints" without listing them all.

TikTok's post for advertisers names one: when you open a product page in TikTok's in-app browser, a chat window appears. Its answers come from information the merchant provides, according to TikTok, so think of it as the brand's product page in chat form. From there you can keep going to checkout on the merchant's own site, still inside the in-app browser.

How Buy Direct checkout works

Buy Direct is the faster path. TikTok says it lets you buy from a brand with one click from the For You feed, the main video feed. Per the advertiser post, it is a native checkout with one-click purchase using stored payment methods and saved addresses, and order tracking in the app.

This is not TikTok Shop. Adweek reports that Buy Direct sells directly from brands, separately from TikTok's own marketplace. David Kaufman, TikTok's global head of monetization product partnerships, told Adweek the goal is to move people "from discovery all the way through to action."

Where and when you can use it

There is no firm date for the TikTok AI shopping assistant or Buy Direct reaching regular users. TikTok's advertiser post says its agentic tools are "available through eligibility-based testing opportunities," and brands have to ask their TikTok sales contact whether they qualify. Adweek says both features are beginning to roll out to users and brands in the US. TikTok's announcement names no other markets and no timeline per country.

One partner points later. Salesforce's announcement says its Universal Commerce Protocol experiences with TikTok, the technology Buy Direct runs on, are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027. So if you don't see a Buy Direct button yet, that is expected.

Checkout partners, your data and merchants

TikTok says it built the program with Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, Stripe "and more" commerce and payment providers. To sell through Buy Direct, a brand must connect through the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a shared set of rules that lets AI agents and store systems complete orders together.

For shoppers, the key detail is who you are buying from. The brand, not TikTok, is the merchant of record, TikTok says. Salesforce adds that merchants handle customer service and returns, and capture your contact information, purchase history and preferences directly.

What we could not find: none of the announcements we read say how long TikTok keeps your assistant chats or whether they shape the ads you see. Our advice until TikTok says more: treat anything you type there as visible to both TikTok and the brand.

For merchants, the pitch is a sale without a redirect to an outside site. The cost is setup work: a UCP integration and eligibility approval. Salesforce says its stores can use its own payments and order management tools to keep that setup small.

Why TikTok wants shopping to stay in the app

TikTok already sells a lot. Research firm eMarketer estimated in December 2025 that TikTok Shop would reach US$15.82 billion in US sales in 2025, about 18.2% of US social commerce.

TechCrunch's Aisha Malik reads the assistant as a bid to keep product questions inside TikTok rather than letting them go to outside AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT. That is her analysis; TikTok's announcement doesn't name a rival. It fits the moment, though: OpenAI is building its own ad business inside ChatGPT, now testing ads beside generated images.

Also announced for advertisers

  • Business MCP connectors: TikTok's Business MCP, which uses the Model Context Protocol standard to let AI assistants run its ad tools, is now a connector in Claude, Kimi, Manus, Perplexity, Replit, Snowflake, Tencent WorkBuddy and the IAB Tech Lab Agent Registry. TikTok says advertisers using its MCP grew more than 200% from July to September 2026.
  • TikTok Ad Network: the network formerly called Pangle is now open to advertisers targeting the US, reaching nearly 400,000 apps worldwide, per TikTok.
  • Agentic Leads: an AI agent that qualifies sales leads in TikTok direct messages and on advertisers' lead forms.

Bottom line

If you shop on TikTok in the US, expect the TikTok AI shopping assistant and one-click Buy Direct checkout to show up for some brands, gradually, as they qualify. When you buy, you are buying from the brand, and it gets your details. For more on how AI agents are changing apps, see our AI agents coverage and the software section.

FAQ

Is Buy Direct the same as TikTok Shop?

No. TikTok Shop is TikTok's own marketplace. Buy Direct is a checkout for brands selling directly, where the brand is the merchant of record and handles returns and service.

When will the TikTok AI shopping assistant be available?

TikTok gave no public date. It calls the tools eligibility-based testing for advertisers, Adweek reports a US rollout starting now, and Salesforce expects the UCP-powered TikTok experiences Buy Direct depends on to begin in early 2027.

Does the shopping assistant use my data?

The assistant answers from information the merchant provides, by TikTok's account. If you buy, the brand gets your contact details and purchase history, according to Salesforce. TikTok has not published how it stores assistant conversations.
