The Surface Laptop Ultra price starts at $2,599 in the US, preorders opened on October 7, and Microsoft says availability begins Friday, October 16. It's a 15-inch laptop built on Nvidia's RTX Spark chip with up to 128GB of memory, and every performance number attached to it so far comes from Microsoft or Nvidia. Nobody outside those two companies has published a test yet.
Key takeaways
- Price: from $2,599 (Microsoft's US list price), and TweakTown reports $5,899 for the 128GB configuration. Those are US prices as of October 9, 2026.
- Ship date: Microsoft says availability starts October 16, from Microsoft.com and select retailers.
- The cheapest model uses a cut-down chip: an 18-core CPU, a 5,120-core GPU and 24GB of memory, according to TweakTown. The full 20-core, 6,144-core chip costs more.
- Performance is claimed, not tested: Nvidia compares the graphics to a laptop RTX 5070, and Microsoft claims big wins over a MacBook Pro. No independent benchmark exists yet.
- Against Gorgon Halo, on paper: RTX Spark tops out at 128GB of memory to AMD's 192GB. A 128GB Surface costs $5,899, while 192GB Gorgon Halo systems start around $6,399.
Surface Laptop Ultra price and configurations
Microsoft's October 7 announcement gives one price: preorders "start at $2,599" (the US product page shows $2,599.99). The post doesn't list every configuration, so the rest comes from the store listings as reported by TweakTown:
- Entry model, $2,599: 18-core CPU, 5,120-core GPU, 24GB of unified memory, 512GB SSD.
- Top memory, $5,899: 128GB of unified memory. Nvidia's specs only allow 128GB on the full chip, with the 20-core CPU and 6,144-core GPU.
Engadget reports that the 18-core version tops out at 32GB of memory, while the 20-core version goes up to 128GB. Storage reaches 2TB and the SSD is user-removable, so you can upgrade it later. Microsoft sells it in Platinum and Nightfall, the second only on some models.
Prices outside the US weren't in Microsoft's announcement. If you're in Mexico or elsewhere in Latin America, check the local Microsoft Store before assuming the US price applies.
Surface Laptop Ultra specs Microsoft confirmed
Here's what Microsoft's announcement and product page list. Where a figure is a ceiling ("up to"), it belongs to the most expensive configurations.
| Surface Laptop Ultra | |
|---|---|
| Chip | Nvidia RTX Spark |
| CPU | Nvidia Grace (Arm), up to 20 cores |
| GPU | Nvidia Blackwell RTX, up to 6,144 cores |
| Memory | Up to 128GB unified, shared by CPU and GPU (the GPU can use less than the total) |
| Storage | Up to 2TB SSD, user-removable |
| Display | 15-inch PixelSense Ultra mini-LED touchscreen, 120 Hz, up to 2,000 nits peak HDR, 100% DCI-P3 |
| Ports | Magnetic Connect (magnetic USB-C charging), two more USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, SD card reader, 3.5 mm headphone jack |
| Size | Under 18 mm thick, under 4.5 lb |
| Battery | "All-day," with no hour figure published |
The 2,000 nits figure is peak HDR brightness on 10% of the screen; Microsoft's footnote says sustained and SDR brightness are lower. Engadget adds that the screen is 3:2 and the touchpad is 30% larger than on earlier 15-inch Surface Laptops.

RTX Spark performance claims nobody has tested
Every speed figure for this laptop is a vendor claim. Here's who says what:
- Graphics: when Nvidia unveiled RTX Spark in June, it said the GPU performs similarly to the laptop RTX 5070 while drawing much less power, according to Engadget. Nvidia's RTX Spark page lists the laptop chips at 45 to 80W.
- AI compute: Microsoft and Nvidia quote up to 1 petaflop, a theoretical FP4 figure that uses a feature called sparsity, and say the laptop can run models of more than 120 billion parameters locally.
- Against Apple: Microsoft claims 6.2 times faster video generation, 4.3 times faster image creation and 2.1 times faster time to first token than a MacBook Pro with M5 Pro, as reported by Engadget. Microsoft also says the laptop keeps 99% of its peak performance on battery.
- Cooling: Microsoft claims up to 2.5 times the thermal capacity of the 15-inch Surface Laptop (8th Edition).
Watch which machine those claims describe. Microsoft's footnotes say its tests used a preproduction unit with the 6,144-core GPU and 64GB of memory, plus 1TB of storage. The $2,599 model has fewer GPU cores and less memory, so expect it to land below those numbers.

How it compares with Gorgon Halo on paper
AMD's Gorgon Halo chips (the Ryzen AI Max PRO 400 series) are the closest rival: CPU, graphics and a big shared memory pool in one package, aimed at running AI models locally. Here's the top of each lineup, using only what the companies and their partners have published.
| Surface Laptop Ultra (RTX Spark) | Gorgon Halo (Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495) | |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Up to 20 Grace cores (Microsoft) | 16 Zen 5 cores (AMD) |
| Graphics | Up to 6,144 Blackwell cores (Microsoft) | 40 compute units (AMD) |
| Maximum memory | 128GB (Microsoft) | 192GB, up to 160GB for graphics (AMD) |
| AI figure | Up to 1 petaflop FP4, theoretical (Nvidia) | 55 TOPS from the NPU (AMD) |
| Top-memory price | $5,899 for 128GB (store listing) | $6,399 to $9,249 for 192GB systems |
| Availability | October 16 | On sale since September 28 |
AMD's specs come from its launch post, and the 192GB system prices from TechRadar's October 2 roundup, which includes promotional prices. The AI figures measure different parts of each chip, so they don't compare directly.
AMD's own benchmarks, up to 42 tokens per second on one model and up to 20 on a much larger one, are covered in our Gorgon Halo vs RTX Spark analysis. Microsoft and Nvidia haven't published token speeds on those models, and each side compares itself with someone else: AMD with Intel, Microsoft with Apple. So the honest summary is memory against price. AMD holds more, and the 128GB Surface costs less than the cheapest 192GB Gorgon Halo machine. Which one runs faster has to wait for independent tests.
Surface RTX Spark Dev Box price and ship date
Microsoft also opened preorders for the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact desktop for developers, at $5,999. It's sold only on Microsoft.com in the US and, according to Microsoft, starts shipping in November. It has 128GB of unified memory, the same 1 petaflop claim, and comes with developer tools such as Visual Studio Code, Git, GitHub Copilot, WSL, Python and Node.
For context, Nvidia's own 128GB DGX Spark sells for $6,950, as we covered in the DGX Spark 64GB launch.
What happens next
- October 16: availability of the laptop begins, according to Microsoft.
- Through November 23: Microsoft offers up to $1,000 back for trading in an eligible MacBook Pro, only on its online store in the US and Canada.
- November: the Dev Box starts shipping in the US.
- The first independent reviews: the questions they need to answer are battery hours, whether the RTX 5070 comparison holds in games, and how the $2,599 model performs next to the configuration Microsoft tested.
Bottom line
The Surface Laptop Ultra price runs from $2,599 to $5,899 in the US, and it ships October 16. The specs are confirmed; the speed is not. Nvidia's RTX 5070 comparison and Microsoft's MacBook figures are vendor claims measured on a 64GB unit, not on the base model. If you need more than 128GB for local AI, Gorgon Halo is the only option on paper. Otherwise, waiting a week or two for reviews costs nothing. More launches are in our gadgets section.
