Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2: 30fps, two TV modes, Dec 4

Monster Hunter Wilds on Switch 2 runs at 30fps in every mode from Dec 4. What Capcom rebuilt for the port, what it says it learned, and what's still unknown.

Monster Hunter Wilds comes to Switch 2 on December 4, 2026, and Capcom says getting it there meant rebuilding parts of the game from scratch. Producer Genki Sunano told Kotaku the Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 port was a long run of small decisions and optimizations, and Capcom's own spec sheet sets every Switch 2 mode at 30 frames per second, with a choice between resolution and frame rate settings when you play on a TV.

Key takeaways

  • The release date isn't new. Capcom announced December 4, 2026, during the September 9 Nintendo Direct. What's new is Capcom explaining how the port was made.
  • Capcom lists three Switch 2 settings, all at 30fps: 2240 x 1260 (TV, resolution priority), 1920 x 1080 (TV, frame rate priority) and 1536 x 864 (handheld). Ray tracing is off in all three.
  • Sunano says the team rebuilt some assets and shaders from scratch and plans to use what it learned to improve performance on the existing PS5, Xbox and PC versions. Capcom gave no schedule for that.
  • 30fps is Capcom's target, not a measured result: its own notes warn that the frame rate may drop under heavy load. No independent performance analysis had been published as of October 4, 2026.

What Capcom changed for the Switch 2 port

In an interview Kotaku published in late September, Sunano described the port as "painstaking, and at times seemingly endless," a process of deciding, one item at a time, where the Switch 2's resources should go. According to Kotaku, the team rebuilt certain assets and shaders from scratch with more efficient implementations and replaced some visual techniques and internal processing. When it reworked visual-effect assets, it kept them aligned with the existing hitboxes and collision detection, so the new effects shouldn't change where attacks connect.

Sunano said the team focused its resources on the areas that directly affect how the game plays. Kotaku reports the goal was a stable 30fps in handheld mode, even in four-player hunts. Apart from ray tracing, which is off on Switch 2, Capcom hasn't named anything that was cut. Wilds runs on RE Engine, the in-house engine Capcom is also preparing for AI-assisted development, so the lessons from this port stay inside the same toolset.

Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 performance modes

Capcom's official product page lists the Switch 2 settings:

ModeOutput resolutionFrame rateRay tracing
TV, prioritize resolution2240 x 126030fpsOff
TV, prioritize frame rate1920 x 108030fpsOff
Handheld1536 x 86430fpsOff

The "frame rate" setting on TV lowers the resolution but keeps the same 30fps target, so you trade sharpness for headroom, not for a higher frame rate. Capcom hasn't said how much steadier the lower resolution keeps 30fps. Capcom's footnotes add that the rendering resolution changes with system load, with upscaling when it falls below the output resolution, and that the frame rate may drop in some high-load situations.

What you get on December 4

Capcom says the Switch 2 version includes the free Title Updates 1 through 5. It supports online crossplay with the other versions, which needs a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, plus local wireless co-op that Capcom says only the Switch 2 version has. Game Informer reported from the September 9 Nintendo Direct that the Ascendance expansion is also coming to Switch 2 in 2027.

  • Editions: a digital Standard Edition, a digital Gold Edition with a cosmetic collection of 126 DLC packs, and a physical Deluxe Edition sold as a game-key card, which stores a download key rather than the full game (what that means).
  • Price: Nintendo's US store lists the Standard Edition at US$39.99 (checked October 4, 2026). Capcom says pre-orders begin October 20, 2026, with a pre-order discount that runs until January 7, 2027, and points to the store page for prices.
  • Character edits: Capcom says Switch 2 players start with 10 Character Edit and 10 Palico Edit vouchers instead of buying them.

Why the port matters beyond Switch 2

The more interesting promise is for players who already own Wilds. "We plan to apply the knowledge and expertise gained through this project to the performance improvements that we will be making for existing platforms," Sunano told Kotaku. Capcom didn't say which fixes would carry over or when. If you play on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC, treat it as a stated plan rather than a scheduled patch.

For Switch 2 owners, 30fps puts Wilds in the same place as other big ports on the console, such as EA FC 27, which reviewers found runs at 30fps with no 60fps option.

What's still unknown before launch

  • Real-world performance. Capcom's table is a target. No independent outlet had published a measurement of how often four-player hunts or busy areas hold 30fps, as of October 4, 2026.
  • The demo. Capcom says a Prologue Demo is "coming later" on Switch 2, without a date.
  • Your saves. Capcom's multiplayer notes say cross-save isn't supported and progress stays on each platform. It hasn't announced a way to bring a PS5, Xbox or PC save to Switch 2.
  • File size, which neither Capcom nor Nintendo's US store lists yet.

Bottom line

The Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 version is a 30fps game in every mode, launching December 4 with Title Updates 1 through 5, crossplay and a US$39.99 Standard Edition on Nintendo's US store. Capcom's description of a part-by-part rebuild is encouraging, but it's the company's account, not a test result. Wait for the Prologue Demo or the first independent performance analysis before pre-ordering if frame rate in four-player hunts is what matters to you.

FAQ

Does Monster Hunter Wilds run at 60fps on Switch 2?

No. Capcom lists 30fps for all three Switch 2 settings, including the TV mode that prioritizes frame rate. That mode lowers the resolution to 1920 x 1080 instead of raising the frame rate.

What is the Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 release date?

Friday, December 4, 2026, the Switch 2 release date Capcom announced during the September 9 Nintendo Direct. Capcom says pre-orders begin October 20, 2026.

Can you play with friends on other consoles?

Yes. Capcom says the Switch 2 version supports online crossplay with the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC versions, which requires Nintendo Switch Online. Capcom's notes say saves and paid DLC don't carry across platforms.
